INTERNSHIPS

Events & Public Relations Internship

Responsibilities

  • Assist staff in planning upcoming fundraising events, including helping secure speakers and guests as well as other logistics
  • Work with a team to draft content for social media communication, press releases and other promotional materials
  • Help secure speaking engagements for Layalina’s leadership and other opportunities for increased visibility
  • Help research and prepare applications for film festivals and awards competitions to showcase Layalina’s latest productions
  • Assist with donor communication and occasional data entry
  • Assist with various administrative duties as needed
  • Help Layalina expand its profile and network by representing the organization at relevant events in Washington, D.C.

Necessary Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Public Relations, Communications, Political Science, Middle East Studies, International Relations, or other related degree
  • A keen interest in non-profit work, public diplomacy and/or international media
  • Experience in event planning, office work and/or communications, ideally in the non-profit sector
  • Strong communication and networking abilities
  • Strong writing, editorial, and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with an ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database management experience
  • Enthusiasm and desire to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven, team-oriented organization
  • Demonstrated interest in the Middle East, public diplomacy, Arabic, and/or international media

Note: Successful upperclassmen undergraduates pursuing relevant degrees will also be considered. This position is unpaid, however a travel stipend is available.

The Richard M. Fairbanks, III Memorial Development Internship

Responsibilities

  • Assist staff in coordinating fundraising outreach to foundations, individuals, and corporations
  • Conduct fundraising research to support Layalina’s programming
  • Assist with donor management and occasional data entry
  • Assist with various administrative duties as needed
  • Represent Layalina at relevant events in Washington, DC

 Necessary Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Political Science, Middle East Studies, International Relations or similar
  • A keen interest in non-profit work, public diplomacy and/or international media
  • Office work or other experience in fundraising and/or communications in the non-profit or private sector
  • Previous grant writing experience preferred
  • Strong writing, editorial, organizational, and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with an ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database management experience
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization
  • Demonstrated interest in the Middle East, public diplomacy, Arabic, and/or international media

The Loren Savitsky Memorial Production Internship

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, pre-production, production, and post-production of Layalina shows
  • Help conduct background research as required for ongoing projects
  • Manage show-specific social media presence
  • Represent Layalina at relevant events in Washington, DC
  • Help draft and update Layalina’s website content
  • Create show-specific promotional materials
  • Assist with various administrative duties as needed

Necessary Qualifications

  • BA/BS in film, public relations, Middle Eastern studies or similar, with a keen interest in non-profit work and international media
  • Office work experience in communications and/or fundraising in the non-profit or private sector
  • Strong writing, editorial, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience updating web content and with Adobe Creative Suite desired but not required
  • Excellent attention to detail with an ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization
  • Demonstrated interest in the Middle East, public diplomacy, Arabic, and/or international media

Note: Successful upperclassmen undergraduates pursuing relevant degrees will also be considered. This position is unpaid, however a travel stipend is available.

This internship is named in memory of Loren Savitsky, who worked as a 1st camera assistant and gaffer on the first and second seasons of On the Road in America and was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2009.

The Thomas W. Ludlow Ashley Memorial Communications & Editorial Internship

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and assist in drafting, editing, layout and dissemination our quarterly newsletter, The Layalina Chronicle
  • Help to expand Layalina’s social media presence via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Manage photo assets and upload to website, Flickr, and other outlets as needed
  • Draft and distribute correspondence and written materials, including meeting notes
  • Assist with various administrative duties as needed
  • Represent Layalina at relevant events in Washington, DC

Necessary Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Media Studies or other relevant field
  • A keen interest in non-profit work, public diplomacy and/or international media
  • Strong Communications experience preferred, including familiarity with Adobe Suite, Hootsuite, and social media platforms
  • Strong writing, editorial, organizational, and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with an ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization
  • Demonstrated interest in the Middle East, public diplomacy, Arabic, and/or international media

This internship honors the memory of the Honorable Thomas W. Ludlow Ashley, a founding Layalina director, advocate for international broadcasting and accomplished member of the United States House of Representatives.
